SCENARIO
We have been asked to provide a full network solution for a company which is located in three different places. Head office is located in Sydney in which they have a three stairs building each floor occupied by 100 users of their three departments Administration, Sales and Engineering. The Melbourne site has two stairs building in which 100 users occupied in each and the 1st floor is shared by Administration and Sales departments the 2nd floor is shared by engineering department. The Brisbane branch has a single floor building in which 100 users are occupied.
The current network of all sites is based on peer-to-peer design and Cat-5 has been used with multi-port repeaters in each floor but isolation to the other floors. Three sites do not have connectivity between each other at the moment
SOLUTION
LAN
I would suggest keeping the current Cat-5 cabling system as it has the capability to transfer data efficiently and also it supports the current days’ requirements.
Star topology will be use for the internal LAN in each floor of all sites where switches will be the main connecting device of all workstations. I recommend using Switches than using existing Repeaters as switches are smarter than repeaters and faster too. Each department will be given a Server which will make easier to maintain and troubleshoot if any damage happened to the servers. Also information can be stored separately in each department’s server which will make it easier to handle data.
Connectivity between Sites
Satellite will be used to connect three sites of Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane. As the three sites are located in three separate geographic locations, satellite technology will be the best option to connect them to each other. A satellite dish will be installed at each site to send and receive data. It can support a speed of 10Mbps data transferring rate.
