Support / Designing a network

QUESTIONS

1. Suppose the following situation exists: Your Company which has 258 users occupies three buildings on a campus. Each of these buildings has a 10BaseT network running to all floors. The buildings form a rough triangle, 1500 meters on each side. Each is within sight of each other. You must choose a network type to connect the buildings.

Considerations: the network must support 100Mbps transfer speeds. The network must be easy to install and maintain. The network should be immune to EMI.

What type of media proposal would suit the considerations above? Explain your answer.
What type of technology would support the network?
What subnet mask would you propose for this network?

2. You are planning a network for a computer assisted drafting company. They use very powerful client computers running Ms Windows 2K and they will be transferring very large files. You have the option of using Ethernet or Fast Ethernet at your discretion. Which will you recommend, and why?

3. Your boss tells you he doesn’t want to get a server because a company he used to work for had one that crashed all the time. Which features of modern network operating systems can you point out that reduces this risk?

4. Your advice is needed for a small company that is on a tight budget. They ask if they can have a very powerful workstation (P4 1.8) they already own converted into a server to run W2K advanced server network. Is this possible? If so, what hardware and software will be required?

5. Your boss asks if you can think of any way to save on software costs in the company. Your company uses a number of different packages, such as word processors, spreadsheets, database software, and accounting packages. Everyone uses them periodically, but only occasionally does more than one use actually have the same program running at the same time. What is your response?

ANSWERS

1. Use the single-mode fiber optic cable, it could expand over 1000 meters, immune with EMI, and support 100Mbps
Use the star expand topology
Subnet mask, use class B with subnet mask /22. There have 62 available networks, and 1022 available host

2. Because they need to transfer very large file, we recommend Fast Ethernet

3. Window 2003 server

4. Yes, it could possible, need more RAM and Win 2K server or advance server. We recommend 1GB RAM for this workstation to upgrade to server, need the diagnostic software to configure how this computer perform at server version

5. We could buy the software licenses per connection mode, it might we only need when have a connection actual runs
