INTRODUCTION to Calculate Bandwidth
The report shows the calculation of download and uploads bandwidth for transfer survey document. This document is formatted in Microsoft Word Document
The business process the survey from its branches both Intrastate and Interstate. These files arrive by cheap packet data transfer and are placed onto a file and print server each night. They have 20 staffs each performs 7.5 hours of work and process 30 surveys each per hour
We need calculated the bandwidth and storage space requirement to satisfy the number of staff to finish all survey in normal condition (not slow the network or run out the space)
Survey summary detail
Survey document is 3011 Bytes, it will send from the server to increases the file size by 0.250 Kilobytes (256 Bytes). Then, the completed survey will re save and send back to the server will different name and location
The survey and complete survey will process below time.
• Completed surveys are purged from the local hard drive after 6 weeks.
• Completed surveys are purged from the file server after 6 months
• Surveys are purged from the file server after 4 weeks
In the case above, we need calculate the bandwidth and disk space inquiry
• The bandwidth required for download from the server.
• The bandwidth required for upload to the server.
• The amount of disk space required at the server to store the files.
• The amount of disk space required at the workstation to store the files.
We also have to provide two suitable backup solutions including fully specified hardware components including media that is suitable for the size of the data retained on the server.
Bandwidth
We done the lab practical to simulation the upload and download on the workstation and server (window XP pro and window 2003 server)
The DU meter is used to calculate the bandwidth stream (upload and download)
We calculation the download and upload per survey and completed survey
Then we simulation 30 survey is dong together
The Upload stream required each day is 24 MB/sec
In capacity planning we should keep it in 75% of 100%. So the actual requirement is
24 / 0.75 = 32 MB/sec
And Download stream required each day is 61 MB/sec
Same with the upload stream, download stream requirement is
61 / 0.75 = 81.33 MB/sec
When finish the download or upload, we use the file properties to check the disk size between the workstation and the server, we discover the file size on disk between workstation and server is the same. It causes by the workstation and server is use the NTFS file system. Whatever operating system, the same file system (NTFS) causes the same file size on disk. This will effect the disk space calculation in below section
Recommendation
When the file we not only keep the actual requirement space, we calculate extra more space for the future expands. In capacity planning, we should keep more 50% space for the future or emergency need, it may it should be 1GB requirement. Nowadays the minimum disk space is 40GB hard drive, it is sufficient for the server storage space (often the OS only take 5GB, and 5GB for the application) we still have 30GB free the survey and completed survey storage
In the workstation side, the disk space requirement is 22 MB, we still need add more 50% space for the future or emergency need, so that, the workstation required 50 MB space. As we mention above, the minimum hard disk is 40GB, it is enough for the workstation needs.
Backup solution
Backup is the way which keeps the data safe from any situation
In this business, data is the crucial information. We could not believe on the defender system or protector software. We may backup the data to prevent any circumstance like system crash, hard disk broken or virus attacks
Backup schedule
• Daily backup we perform the incremental backup or differential backup
• Weekly backup and monthly backup we perform the full backup
Solution1 – External Disk
With the calculation disk space for server above, over 300GB is plenty space for the backup surveys at the server
Hardware specification
External 320GB Hard Disk USB 2.0
• Capacity: 320 GB
• Rotational Speed: 7,200 RPM (nominal)
• Buffer Size: 8 MB
• Average Latency: 4.20 ms (nominal)
• Read Seek Time(Average): 8.9 ms
• Track-To-Track Seek Time: 2.0 ms (average)
• Interface: 10/100 Base-T Ethernet
• Port: 2 x USB2.0
• Dimensions(HxLxW): 5.91 x 9.44 x 2.19 inch / 150 x 239.9 x 55.5 mm
Software specification
Windows Backup Utility
• This is the built in utility of the windows. It is fully support the window platform.
• It support the backup for the external hard disk with USB, Firewire interface
• It include many backup type: Daily backup, Incremental backup, Differential backup, and fully backup
• It provides the set schedule function let the admin perform backup job in schedule time.
Solution1 – Tape Backup
Tape backup is the backup data at the tape
Hardware specification
HP SureStore DAT 40e - tape drive - DAT – SCSI
• Type: DAT
• Capacity: 20 GB (native) / 40 GB (compressed)
• Media Type: DAT
• Recording Standard: DDS-4
• Data Transfer Rate (native): 3MBps (10.5 GBph)
• Data Transfer Rate (compressed): 6MBps (21.1 GBph)
• Average Seek / Access Time: 50 sec
• Buffer Size: 4 MB
• Interfaces: Ultra2 Wide SCSI
Software specification
Windows Backup Utility
• This is the built in utility of the windows. It is fully support the window platform.
• It support the backup for tape
• It include many backup type: Daily backup, Incremental backup, Differential backup, and fully backup
• It provides the set schedule function let the admin perform backup job in schedule time.
Naming Convention
Naming convention help administrator quickly restore the data from the backup media. So its name should express the information about the data include data type, date backup and type backup
Completed survey we suggest name by CS.
Received survey we should name by RS.
With the backup type, “full” express the full backup, “diff” express the differential backup and “incr” express the incremental backup
We also put the date DD/MM/YYYY when perform the backup
The naming folder is [CS | RS]_[full | diff | incr]_[DDMMYYYY]
For example, when perform full backup of received survey on 23/11/2006. The backup file should naming by “CS_full_23112006”
CONCLUSION
In conclusion, the download and upload stream should be 81.33 MB/sec and 32 MB/sec to fulfill 20 staff completed their work within 7.5 hour (30 surveys per hour)
At the disk space storage requirement, workstations require 50MB free space and the server require 1GB free space. The hard disk space today is around 40GB, so it fulfill the requirement of the both server and workstation
